The Walrus | Canada's Conversation

NEW EVENT! Extracurricular and enrichment activities are proven to provide young people with a more well-rounded education, as well as developing their social, cultural, and physical skills. So why are nearly a third of parents in Canada going into debt to pay for them? And why are public schools forced to depend on fundraising by parents to provide them?

At The Walrus Talks at Home: Public Education and Philanthropy, four speakers discuss this urgent issue and its impact on the next generation in Canada. They’ll also address the strain on parents in rural and remote regions—especially the North—who have an even harder time finding programs for their kids, and highlight some of the community organizations trying to fill the gaps.

Join us for an important discussion about public education, philanthropy, and how this country can better set our kids up for their future.

Bringing people together around the globe

A theme that often comes up at The Walrus Talks is the power of connection to improve our sense of wellbeing and our understanding of our neighbours. When you come to The Walrus Talks in person, you’re joining a live audience of curious, friendly people excited to learn, exchange ideas, catch up with old friends and make new ones in the buzzing post-event reception.

Our virtual events and livestreams also spark connection. In 2024, we welcomed attendees from every province and territory, as well as eighty-two other countries around the world! The Walrus Talks Reimagining Volunteerism

NEW EVENT! In the next installment of our series on belonging, join us as we look at the power of volunteerism to build shared purpose, individual agency, and community cohesion.

At The Walrus Talks Reimagining Volunteerism, seven speakers will discuss the joys and benefits of service, as well as some of the barriers that keep us from giving more of our time. They’ll also expand our conception of what community service can look like, outside of organization-based volunteerism.

Take advantage of this time to connect in person by joining us live in Toronto for an evening that will reshape how you think about the value of meeting the needs of others, both for yourself and for your communities. If you can’t join us in person, be sure to check out the livestream!
