The prime minister on saying no to Washington and how Canada plans to withstand the fallout
BY MARK CARNEY
|
 |
Why did the trade deal fail? In some ways, simply for the reason that negotiations generally fail: “They asked too much, and they offered too little,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said.
“There were some things we wouldn’t do. We were not prepared to compromise Canada’s sovereignty or to undermine our key industries. We were not prepared to compromise on our sovereignty, the protection of the French language, or our culture. To be clear with our American colleagues, for my government and for Canada, these issues were never on the table, even though the United States pushed for them until the very last minute.”

For generations, people across Canada have come together to support each other through volunteering, donating, joining, and leading. So why do 51% of Canadians say they’re feeling lonely? At The Walrus Talks Community Reborn, leading thinkers and civic leaders will explore how nonprofits are the invisible glue holding our society together.

It’s easy: Choose Canadian. |
As we brace for this trade war, remember that the sharpest weapon aimed at us isn’t a tariff. It’s disinformation.
Case in point: Trump keeps insisting America doesn’t need us. But Canada is the number one customer for more than two dozen US states and supplies almost all of the natural gas the US imports. Turn that tap off and see how “we don’t need Canada” ages.
The Walrus is going to keep making sure you have the truth. No tariff on that. Promise.
We publish our journalism for free so Canadians can be armed with knowledge in this cross-border fight for the facts. More than 1,100 readers have donated this year to keep down paywalls for everyone. If you’re one of them, thank you, truly. If you’re not, this is your moment.
Buy Canadian. Read Canadian. Fund the Canadian journalism Trump’s noise machine would pay good money to erase.
Stand with Canada. Stand with The Walrus.
