From the author: “The first time I used ChatGPT, I asked it to write a limerick about pizza. I was shocked at the result. No, it wasn’t great. But what surprised me was the simple fact it could do it at all. Was there really a thinking, alien thing lurking behind that chat window?

Will I lose my job to artificial intelligence? Will the new technology fill the internet with even more misinformation? Will it usher in a grand utopia of productivity or our ultimate doom? Since 2022, AI has been a question on everyone’s minds: artists, academics, governments, and businesses have been scrambling to predict what the future will look like.

Earlier this year, The Walrus tasked long-time tech writer Navneet Alang with answering some of these questions. His level‐headed, fact‐based take on AI and where it’s headed is what we needed to hear amid the noise. The Walrus supported his work by giving him space to answer important questions about how AI really works and what intelligence really means.

You deserve to know what’s headed your way from a level‐headed, fact‐based source. So we plan to keep covering AI and how it affects everything from day‐to‐day life to democracy, but we need your help to keep doing this work.
