The Walrus | Canada's Conversation

We are living through an era of large-scale divestment from public institutions, particularly those devoted to the cultivation of an educated citizenship. Nowhere is this clearer than in our public schools, many of which are physically crumbling. - Ira Wells, They Sold Out Big Bird, and They’ll Sell Out the Rest of Us Too

On Tuesday, March 25th, we are gathering online to talk about Canada’s public education system. Many of the provincial and territorial governments have failed to keep up with the costs of education, and parents are being called on to fill the funding gaps. Is this a new frontier for the philanthropic sector? I hope you'll join us at The Walrus Talks at Home: Public Education and Philanthropy for a crucial conversation about the institutions that are teaching and growing our next generation.

The Walrus Talks Reimagining Volunteerism

In the next installment of our series on belonging, join us as we look at the power of volunteerism to build shared purpose, individual agency, and community cohesion.

At The Walrus Talks Reimagining Volunteerism, seven speakers will discuss the joys and benefits of service, as well as some of the barriers that keep us from giving more of our time. They’ll also expand our conception of what community service can look like, outside of organization-based volunteerism.

Take advantage of this time to connect in person by joining us live in Toronto for an evening that will reshape how you think about the value of meeting the needs of others, both for yourself and for your communities. If you can’t join us in person, be sure to check out the livestream!
