From the author: When I was a teenager, I briefly attended the Meeting House, one of Canada’s most popular megachurches. It was billed as a welcoming and fun place to explore Christianity—a church for people who aren’t into church.

Since 2021, allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct have emerged against the church’s charismatic leader as well as against other church pastors. For the March/April cover story of The Walrus, I investigated the scandal that has threatened to undermine this megachurch—as well as what these institutions offer and how they can fail to live up to their promises.
