The party’s principles now depend on what the moment requires
BY COLIN HORGAN
“This is not the time for politics as usual, for petty differences and for political point scoring,” Carney intoned when he finally took the stage. “The founding insight of our country is that unity does not require uniformity,” Carney said. This founding insight “is neither a myth nor a miracle” but rather the result of a series of decisions made across generations, he said. “Pragmatic decisions” (of course) “that have become a moral conviction.” Liberals stand in that tradition, Carney said. Laurier’s federation building. Pearson’s social programs. Then Trudeau. The Canada Child Benefit. Indigenous
reconciliation. And “a true compact with future generations.” The crowd cheered. Many around me got to their feet.

A MESSAGE FROM THE WALRUS LAB IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WILSON COLLEGE OF LEADERSHIP AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AT MCMASTER UNIVERSITY
Climate Justice Is Social Justice
Renowned activist Kumi Naidoo explores the urgent need to phase out fossil fuels and confront the outsized influence of the fossil fuel industry. Drawing on decades of activism, he connects climate justice to broader struggles for equity and human rights, emphasizing the importance of people-led movements and centering those most affected.
The conversation also highlights the growing call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and what meaningful action could look like now.

In this episode of What Happened Next, host Nathan Whitlock is joined by Meredith Hambrock, whose most recent book is She’s a Lamb!. Meredith talks to Nathan about her habit of deleting entire manuscripts (not permanently) while they are in progress, about her love of dark comedy and her resistance to sticking to the rules of the genre, and about her next book, which has a narrative hook so good, she had to make sure nobody else had thought of it already.
