Welcome to the third issue of The Walrus Lab Insider, a regular update from our client services department. The past few months have marked the return of in-person events and networking opportunities. We’ve also seen a sharp increase in travel, which has played a key role in some of our client work.

If you are flying with Air Canada, be sure to check out The Walrus podcasts on the in-flight entertainment system. We are grateful for our longstanding partnership with Air Canada as our exclusive airline partner. Select podcasts from The Walrus are now available to stream on the screens on seatbacks. Next time you’re on an Air Canada flight, check out episodes of The Conversation Piece, What Do We Do Tomorrow?, and Courage Incorporated.

Spring was full of events and gatherings for our team as well as for our clients. The largest undertaking from The Walrus Lab was organizing the successful in-person return of the Amazon Canada First Novel Awards. We returned to the terrace of The Globe and Mail Centre in Toronto for the first time since 2019. On June 1, we welcomed the shortlisted writers, judges, and 100 invited guests from the publishing community to celebrate emerging Canadian authors. Pik Shuen-Fung won the $60,000 prize for her debut novel Ghost Forest, while Caitlin Mah took home the Youth Short Story category prize and $5,000 for her piece, “Mei-Ying, the Heavens Are Crying."

Our custom content production team has been working hard telling brand stories for a growing number of clients. We’re starting to see much more interest in the recreational travel market. In the spring, we published a branded feature for Visit Cayman Islands, “Not Your Average Islands,” highlighting lesser-known connections to Canadian art in the tropical destination. The Walrus audience is well-traveled with a keen interest in art and culture. We are currently working with more clients in the culture and tourism sector to bring these types of branded stories to our audience, raising the profile of other destinations.
